Ocean Rising

Reef’s Edge IV, encaustic, oil, stabilo pencil, 24” x 24” Quadriptych (2023)

“The Maldives served as an endless wellspring of inspiration, inviting me to delve into the depths of its mesmerizing beauty and translate its essence into abstract seascapes on paper.

Unfortunately, the delicate ecosystem of the Maldives Islands is indeed threatened by global warming.

As a low-lying island nation located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels, increasing temperatures, and more frequent and severe weather events such as storms and coral bleaching.

Even a small increase in the sea level could lead to the inundation of large portions of the islands, displacing communities and threatening infrastructure. Additionally, warmer ocean temperatures contribute to coral bleaching, which can devastate coral reefs, reducing biodiversity and harming the fisheries that many Maldivians depend on for their livelihoods.

Ultimately, I hope that my artwork serves as a catalyst for reflection, connection, and stewardship, inspiring viewers to protect and preserve our fragile ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.”
